The Ayeyarwady Foundation’s transformation of the Yankin Children’s Hospital in Yangon stands as a flagship project under its Health pillar, revolutionizing pediatric care in Myanmar. By converting the former Ministry of Mines offices into a modern 550-bed pediatric hospital, the Foundation created a state-of-the-art facility to serve children across the region. Completed in 2011, this initiative reflects the Foundation’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring a healthier future for Myanmar’s youth. The project is divided into two key areas: Reconstruction and Donations, and Ongoing Support for Operations and Children.

Reconstruction and Donations

The Ayeyarwady Foundation spearheaded the redevelopment of the Yankin Children’s Hospital at No. 90, Thitsa Road (Kanbe), Yankin Township, transforming a 9.5-acre site into a modern pediatric healthcare facility with a total floor area of 268,046 square feet. Over a 13-month period from February 2010 to March 2011, the Foundation renovated and constructed buildings, equipping the hospital to meet the highest standards of medical care.

Key contributions included:

Construction and Renovation: Transformed the former Ministry of Mines offices and auxiliary buildings into a fully functional 550-bed pediatric hospital, complete with modern infrastructure.
Medical Equipment and Furnishings: Installed advanced hospital equipment, including diagnostic and treatment tools, alongside essential furniture and lifts to ensure operational efficiency.
Staff Accommodations: Renovated and constructed residences and quarters for Medical Superintendents (MS), Assistant Medical Officers (AMOs), and nurses, supporting the hospital’s workforce.
Investment: Committed over 9 billion kyats (approximately USD 10 million at historical exchange rates) to fund construction, equipment, and furnishings.

Executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, this project has established Yankin Children’s Hospital as a cornerstone of pediatric care in Yangon, serving thousands of children annually with high-quality medical services.

Ongoing Support for Operations and Children

Since the hospital’s opening in 2011, the Ayeyarwady Foundation has maintained a steadfast commitment to ensuring its smooth operation and supporting its young patients at Yankin Children’s Hospital. In close consultation with the Ministry of Health, hospital administration, and senior doctors, the Foundation has implemented a wide range of initiatives to sustain the facility and enhance patient care:

Financial Support: Provided ongoing funding to the hospital, including subsidies for medical treatment costs for underprivileged patients and support for complex procedures, such as heart surgeries.
Specialized Medical Care: Facilitated surgical interventions for critical cases, including operations for two children with tetra-amelia syndrome (a rare condition involving the absence of all four limbs).
Volunteer Efforts: Organized weekly cleaning activities by volunteers to maintain a hygienic environment within the hospital.
Nutritional Support: Delivered free daily meals exclusively to patients at Yankin Children's Hospital, ensuring proper nutrition to aid recovery for children from across Myanmar.
Security and Staffing: Appointed security personnel and additional staff to support hospital operations, including those related to oxygen supply systems.
Oxygen Infrastructure: Donated and installed a Liquid Oxygen Plant and Oxygen Generators, along with oxygen tanks, to meet the hospital’s critical oxygen needs, with dedicated staff assigned to manage these systems.
Maintenance and Repairs: Addressed wear and tear over time by funding and carrying out repairs to ensure the hospital’s infrastructure remains functional and up to standard.
Staff Welfare: Provided financial assistance and food supplies to hospital staff, supporting their well-being and enabling them to focus on patient care.
