History of Ayeyarwady Foundation

Ayeyarwady Foundation committed to strengthening the capacity and enhance the sustainability to provide effective support for Myanmar.

The Ayeyarwady Foundation is one of Myanmar’s most prominent philanthropic organizations, known for its extensive work in Healthcare, Education, Disaster Management, Sport and Youth Development and Responsible Business Practices. Established in 2010 by businessman U Zaw Zaw, founder of the Max Myanmar Group and AYA Financial Group, the foundation was founded on the belief that business success should be accompanied by social responsibility. Its name, “Ayeyarwady,” is derived from the Ayeyarwady River, the lifeline of Myanmar, symbolizing nourishment, hope, and unity for the people.

In its early years, the foundation concentrated on humanitarian aid. Following natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis (2008), which devastated Myanmar, the foundation played a critical role in providing relief and rebuilding efforts. Though it was formally established two years later, much of its early mission was shaped by the urgent need to support communities during and after times of crisis.

Healthcare has been one of the foundation’s strongest pillars. A milestone achievement was the establishment of the Ayeyarwady Foundation COVID-19 Treatment Center in 2020 during the global pandemic. With limited public health infrastructure in Myanmar, the foundation transformed sports facilities and private resources into fully functioning medical centers, providing thousands of patients with free treatment, medicine, and care. This initiative gained national and international recognition as a symbol of solidarity during one of the country’s most difficult times.

Education is another area of focus. The foundation has supported scholarships, school construction projects, and training programs to empower the younger generation. By investing in human capital, the foundation aims to bridge the gap between privileged and underprivileged communities, ensuring that opportunities for learning and growth reach all corners of Myanmar.

Sports development has also been central to the foundation’s identity. The foundation has consistently invested in nurturing young athletes, promoting sportsmanship, and raising Myanmar’s presence in the regional sports arena. The sponsorship of football reflects the foundation’s philosophy that sports can unify and inspire society.

Over the years, the Ayeyarwady Foundation has become synonymous with charity, resilience, and national pride. Its work extends beyond immediate relief to long-term development, whether through modern hospitals, educational programs, or cultural preservation initiatives. Today, it continues to evolve as a major non-governmental force for social good in Myanmar, representing the belief that private initiative can significantly complement public needs.

With every project, we remain committed to building a healthier, stronger, and more hopeful future for all. From disaster relief to healthcare, from education to sports, the foundation has touched millions of lives. Its journey reflects not only the vision of its founder but also the enduring spirit of the Myanmar people, united under the symbol of the Ayeyarwady River. Together with our partners, supporters, and communities, Ayeyarwady Foundation will continue to turn challenges into opportunities and extend a hand of care where it is needed most.
